Sense & Sensibility
The Merchant of Venice
Performed outdoors in a beautiful Maine summer, this production crashed the Venetian tradition of commedia dell’arte clown theater into Shakespeare’s play. With Shylock’s horned mask acting as a link between Shakespeare’s character and the commedia figure of Pantalone, we interrogated the ethics of performance; representations of Jewishness, class, gender, and sexuality; and the way comedy can slip inexorably into tragedy.
